Heathrow airport baggage handlers scoop lottery jackpot
Tuesday, February 7, 2012
We all dream of a lottery win and get lost in the fantasy of what we would do if those six numbers actually came up.
So when dreams became reality recently for a syndicate of baggage handlers at Heathrow Airport, Heathrow parking customers weren’t surprised to learn that they already knew what to spend it on!
The £1.2 million lottery jackpot win saw each of the members receiving more than £130,000 each. The mid-week win didn’t come so much of a surprise to all however, according to syndicate leader Gerry McNamara.
The Lost luggage supervisor said he knew it was only a matter of time before they won.
He said “friends and family always say if anyone is going to win the lotto it’s me but I like to think it’s my strategy that also had a role to play.”
“I always play last minute, I only bought the syndicate tickets for this draw at 7.26pm! Plus, the nine lines we currently play are those that I identified as the luckiest.”
“I went online and cross-referenced the numbers to see those drawn most often and these lines reflect what I believe are our optimum chance of winning. Seems I was right!”
The other seven members of the syndicate weren’t as optimistic or easily convinced that they’d actually won though. As they found out over the course of 24 hours that they’d each won a share of the jackpot, some took a bit of persuading.
The members have indicated their personal plans for the windfall including mortgage pay-off’s, university education for some of the children, and a longed-for holiday to India. For Gerry, it’s the chance to get his Vauxhall VX220 back on the road after 16 months in the garage!
Our Heathrow parking staff are hoping to bump into some of the lucky winners at a baggage carousel soon and find out how their win has changed their lives and if their luck has continued.
